FAQFrequently asked questions

What is the Valley of Sleep and where is it?

It is a high-altitude valley in the northeastern part of the state of Himachal Pradesh in northern India, sandwiched between Tibet, Ladakh, Lahool, Kullu and Kinnaur. The name itself means "middle land" - that is, something intermediate between Tibet and India.

How high is it?

The bottom of the valley lies at an altitude of approximately 2,950 to 4,100 m. The administrative center of Kaz is at 3,650 m, so prepare for rarefied air and do not hurry with acclimatization.

How to get here?

The road through Kinnaur is open all year round - 412 km from Shimla, long, but good for gradual acclimatization. In summer, there is a shorter route from Manala (201 km) through the Atal Tunnel and the Kunzum Pass, but it is much more rugged. In winter, the roads are covered with snow for 5-6 months.

When is the best time to go?

Summer, from June to September - the season of trekking and open roads. Winter (December-February) - for those who hunt snow leopards and love ice: here they play hockey and skate in the open air.

What to see here?

Old Buddhist monasteries - Tabo (founded in 996), Ki, Dhankar. The highland villages of Kibber, Komik, Gikkim and Langza, Pin Valley National Park and Chandra Tal Lake. Animals include snow leopards, Himalayan ibex and bearded lambs in the sky.
