Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Huanglong and where is he really?
This is a protected scenic area in northwestern China's Sichuan Province (not Nepal, as is sometimes confused), about 370 km north-northwest of Chengdu. Since 1992, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
What is he so famous for?
Colored travertine pools, which calcite has built up in steps. The water in them shimmers yellow, green, blue and brown. Such formations are considered to be among the three best in the world.
Why was the place called the 'yellow dragon'?
The name translates as 'yellow dragon': a chain of golden travertine terraces winding between snow-capped mountains reminded someone of a huge dragon crawling through the snow.
How high is it and should I be afraid of mountains?
The height difference here is serious - from 1700 to 5588 meters, and the highest point is Xuebaoding Peak. The temples themselves in the valley stand at 3,470 and 3,568 meters, so prepare for the height.
What's interesting besides swimming pools?
Waterfalls, hot springs, limestone formations and forests. The reserve (60,000 hectares) is home to rare giant pandas and Sichuan proboscis monkeys, and an endemic orchid was also found here.
