Thorong La
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Torung La and what makes it interesting?
This is a mountain pass in the Himalayas, in the Annapurna massif, at an altitude of 5416 meters. The highest point of the entire track around Annapurna - so if you dream of a selfie under the clouds, come here.
Where is it located?
In Nepal, on the border of Manang and Mustang districts. The pass connects the valleys of the Kali-Gandaki and Marsyandi rivers - simply put, a bridge between the village of Manang and the Muktinath temple.
How is it usually passed?
Most travelers walk from east to west, from Manang to Muktinath, with overnight stays in intermediate villages. Skipping acclimatization here is a bad idea, the mountain does not forgive this.
When is the best time to go?
The safest months are March, April, October and November. In October 2014, a cyclone covered the pass with avalanches, in which 43 people died, so the weather forecast here is read carefully.
How difficult is it?
A good physical condition is required, and the height difference of about 1,300 meters makes the return journey noticeably more difficult. It is better to leave sneakers for walking at home.
