Bran
FAQFrequently asked questions
What kind of castle is this and where is it located?
Bran Castle is a medieval fortress in the village of Bran, Brasov county, in the Romanian part of the Carpathians, 30 kilometers from Brasov. It stands right on the rock near the Rucar-Bran pass.
How old is he and why was he raised at all?
The first fortress was built here in 1212 - not for beauty, but to keep the mountain pass through the pass under control. It was built of stone and brick, in four levels, with a well in the courtyard.
Is this really Dracula's castle?
The fame of the vampire stuck to Bran in the 19th century due to Bram Stoker's novel, but the castle had no direct connection with the real Vlad the Impaler. So look for Dracula in the souvenir shop rather than in the dungeons.
Is there a royal story here?
Yes. In 1920, the local community presented the castle to the Romanian Queen Maria as a sign of gratitude, and it became one of the royal residences.
What is there now and is it worth visiting?
Today, Bran works as a museum and is one of the most visited sites in Romania. Inside - interiors, narrow stairs and the same atmosphere for which tourists flock here.
