What is Lagatsuoi and how tall is it?

This is a mountain in the Dolomites in northern Italy, Belluno province, Veneto region. The height is 2835 meters, so the scenery opens up from there.

How to get there?

The mountain lies about 18 km southwest by road from Cortina d'Ampezzo. From the Falzarego pass (2117 m) a cable car takes you to the top - all the way to the Rifugio Lagazuoi shelter at 2752 meters. You can also walk, but the cable car saves legs.

What is worth seeing here?

The main feature is the network of World War I tunnels dug by Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers. Now they are open as an open-air museum, so you can climb inside the mountain and see what the underground war looked like.

What is interesting about the history of this place?

During the First World War, the so-called mine war took place here: both sides dug tunnels under enemy positions to plant explosives. The mountain literally became a battlefield within itself.

When is the best time to come?

It is most reliable in the summer, when the ropeway works stably and the tunnels and trails are accessible. In winter, the area turns into a ski area, but warm weather is more convenient for viewing the military galleries.
