Ringedalsvatnet
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Ringedalsvatnet and where is it?
This is a lake in western Norway, in the Vestlann fylke (Ullensvang commune), a few kilometers east of the village of Tussedal. In fact, this is a reservoir: the water here is held by the Ringedal Dam, built back in 1910-1918.
Why is the famous Trolltunga here?
The same rocky "troll's tongue" for which half of Instagram goes to Norway hangs over Ringedalsvatnet. So from the top you look straight at this lake.
How big is it?
The lake is elongated: about 8 kilometers long and up to a kilometer wide, the area is about 7 square kilometers. Narrow and long, as befits a mountain fjord-lake.
How to get there?
The landmark is the village of Tüssedal near Odda, from there the road leads to the Skjeggedal area, where the routes begin. Most travelers come here on foot along the Trolltunga trail, not for the shore itself.
When is the best time to go?
The best time is from late spring to early autumn, when the trails are already free of snow. In winter and in the off-season, a hike to Trolltunga above the lake becomes a task for the fit, not for a weekend walk.
