Tengboche
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Tengboche and at what height is it?
This is a Buddhist monastery (the largest gompa in the Khumbu region) at an altitude of about 3860 m in Nepal. It stands at the confluence of the Dudh-Kosi and Imja-Khola rivers, halfway to Everest.
How to get there?
Only on foot - the monastery lies on the classic route to Everest base camp. It is about a two-day walk from Lukla airport, but it is wiser to extend it to four so that the body has time to get used to the altitude.
When is the best time to go and what kind of holiday is there?
In November, Mani-Rimdu is held here - a multi-day festival with masks, monks' dances and theatrical scenes from Buddhist subjects. As for the tracker season - a good neighborhood.
What to see besides the monastery itself?
They come here for the views: Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Nuptse and Tavoche can be seen from here. Plus stone walls with carved mantras and endless prayer flags all over the village.
Are there any interesting facts about this place?
The monastery was rebuilt twice: an earthquake in 1934 destroyed it, and in 1989 it burned to the ground and was rebuilt with international donations. And Tenzing Norgay, who climbed Everest with Hillary in 1953, hails from these regions.
