Context
The village of Riza is located at an altitude of about 540 meters above sea level near the southern slopes of the Dikti mountain range, on the border of the municipalities of Ierapetra and Viannos. The surrounding mountainous terrain is cut by numerous steep gorges, including the Lapatos Canyon to the west and the Sarakina Canyon near the neighboring village of Miti.
Southeastern Crete is characterized by wild karst terrain with sheer rock walls, where hiking trails often run through narrow rocky channels and require increased attention while moving.
