In the city of Nelson in B.C. a pickup truck went off an embankment in a parking lot near a shopping center Chahko Mika Mall and ended up in the waters Kootenay Lake. Emergency services were called to the accident at around 1:20 p.m. on Saturday.

The car began to sink into the water with the woman behind the wheel. Three witnesses to the incident immediately rushed into the lake to help, managed to reach the pickup truck and pull the driver out of the cab in time.

Crews Nelson Police Department, Nelson Fire Department and Emergency Health Services arrived at the scene when the woman was already on dry land and out of danger. Law enforcement officers noted that the driver was sober, and the circumstances and causes of the car falling into the water are currently being investigated.

Context

The city of Nelson is located on the West Arm of the glacial Kootenay Lake, sandwiched between the Selkirk and Purcell ranges. This part of the reservoir has the character of a river channel with significant depth differences and a noticeable current on its way to the Columbia River.

The Chahko Mika Mall shopping center is built directly along the city's waterfront on Lakeside Drive. Due to the mountainous terrain, parking areas and pedestrian paths here are often separated from the shoreline by steep rocky embankments that descend directly to the water.
