The hills near Verona were covered in snow, and a large-scale accident occurred on the highway
On Sunday, November 1, northern Italy was hit by a sudden storm with a flurry of snow flakes. On the hills between the localities of Lessinia and Valpolicella in the province of Verona, heavy precipitation fell in the form of white, opaque ice balls, covering the slopes in a thick layer.
The bad weather caused an emergency situation on the region's roads. On the Autostrada A14 highway near the Cesena toll booth in the Ancona direction, snow flakes led to a massive collision of twelve cars. One of the victims was seriously injured, and traffic on the highway was completely blocked for three hours.
In the opposite, northbound direction of the highway, another accident occurred almost simultaneously, in which three cars collided.
Context
Snow flakes form when falling snowflakes pass through layers of moist air and become covered with microscopic water droplets. The moisture instantly freezes around the snowflake, forming small, white, frosty balls. Unlike regular ice hail, these formations are fragile and bounce back elastically when they hit the surface.
