Landslide warning issued for northwest Iceland
The Icelandic Meteorological Office says a landslide warning is in force in the country’s northwest until 07:00 on 19 October. It covers the southern and northern Westfjords, as well as Strandir and western Húnaflói.
According to the office, warm weather is melting snow still lying in the mountains while rain adds water to the slopes. This can trigger landslides or rockfalls that reach roads; in Strandir, the risk can increase even where rain is limited.
SafeTravel separately warns of rain and strong winds of 15–25 m/s across Iceland from 15:00 until midnight on 18 October. It describes travel conditions as difficult, especially for vehicles exposed to crosswinds.
