The Icelandic Meteorological Office (Veðurstofa / IMO) reports a very deep, intense low approaching from the south: on 14 October 2026 easterly gales, heavy precipitation and possible lightning along fronts are expected, then a shift to northerlies with blizzard conditions in the northwest, where orange warnings were already issued.

The Traveler and Iceland Monitor add that orange coverage first focused on the Westfjords / Northwest (including Strandir); on 14 October models also raised South Iceland and Breiðafjörður to orange. In the south this morning winds of 18–28 m/s are forecast, with local gusts possibly over 40 m/s and heavy rain; the capital region remains on yellow.

After the low’s centre crosses, wind and rain ease in the south and east while blizzards spread east across the north — easing expected Thursday. IMO also warns of unusually low pressure, high waves and elevated sea levels / coastal flooding risk. For visitors, Westfjords passes and the northern Ring Road are critical — check vedur.is and road status before driving.
