How to get to the Carpathians?

How to get to the Carpathians?

In most of our hikes in the Carpathians, the group gathers in Ivano-Frankivsk. How do tourists get from there to the start of the route? What are they driving? How much do they pay? Read our answers to questions about transfers to the Carpathians.

How do hikers get to the Carpathians?

First stage - get to Ivano-Frankivsk, where the group gathers. And at this stage you have complete freedom of choice - you can come by train, bus, Blablacar or by your own car. The main thing is to be in the right place at the right time. The instructor will meet you there and will then take care of everything.

Second stage - transfer from Ivano-Frankivsk directly to the Carpathians. And as I already said, here the group leader will deal with all organizational issues.

Road to Ivano-Frankivsk

Are tickets to Ivano-Frankivsk included in the tour price?

No. All transfers (including the train to Ivano-Frankivsk) are paid separately.

What time should you be in Ivano-Frankivsk? Where exactly?

Most often, the group gathers between 10 and 11 a.m. at the central railway station of Ivano-Frankivsk. But each specific tour may have its own characteristics and its own collection time. This is written on the route description page. In addition, the issue of collection time can be clarified with our administrator when registering for the group.

When should you buy tickets to Ivano-Frankivsk?

Don’t waste a second, book your tickets immediately after our administrator confirms your enrollment in the group and you confirm the collection time with him. Even if you still doubt whether you will go to the mountains, it is still better to get tickets first. The fact is that this direction is very popular and demand often far exceeds supply (Ukrzaliznytsia cannot cope). Therefore, grab your tickets, and if suddenly the trip doesn’t work out, then return them later - the losses there are so significant.

What trains do you recommend?

It's a matter of taste. Some people prefer traditional night trains (cheap, comfortable to sleep, arrive in the morning), others choose Intercity (faster, more expensive, arrive in the evening). But most often there is no particular choice and you just buy what suits you in terms of time and price.

Where can I spend the night if I arrive at IF not in the morning, but the night before?

There are quite decent hotels in Ivano-Frankivsk, but the prices there are quite high. Therefore, most often tourists stay with private owners. Google “Ivano-Frankivsk Podobovo” and quickly find your way around the local short-term rental housing market. A decent one-room apartment with Wi-Fi can cost from 300 hryvnia per day.

Transfer from Ivano-Frankivsk to the mountains

What does the group use to go to the mountains?

In most cases, the guide orders a separate minibus for the group. However, in some cases we also use public transport (buses and minibuses).

Who chooses transport?

The decision to choose one or another type of transport is made by the instructor. Actually, there is not always a choice. Often there is only one way to get to the desired area. However, if given a choice, the guide will consult with the group and offer them options.

How long does it take to get to Kaparti?

Transfer from Ivano-Frankivsk to the Goverla area by chartered minibus takes about 3 hours. You can get to Gorgany a little faster - about 2.5 hours from Bystritsa or Stara Huta. The longest trip to Marmaros is up to 4 hours.

Will there be transfers and changes in transport?

This happens. For example, from Ivano-Frankivsk to the foothills the group travels along a relatively decent highway and at this stage a minibus is used. But at some point the asphalt ends, and the “mountains” have not yet begun. Then you can walk along a boring road in the forest, or rent an SUV (UAZ or GAZ-66).

Why is transfer not included in the tour price?

The cost of the transfer is very variable. It depends on many factors (group size, current weather, road conditions...). If you include a transfer in the price of the tour, you will have to do it with a huge reserve, which will unnecessarily increase the cost of the trip.

And yet, how much will the transfer cost?

On average, travel from Ivano-Frankivsk to the mountains costs about 200 hryvnia per person. The return journey is still the same. But this is on average. For a small group of 3-4 people, the price can be 300 or 400 hryvnia per person. But there is more comfort.

How does payment work?

Usually the instructor collects the money for the trip and then pays it “in bulk” to the owner of the minibus. This happens when boarding a minibus.

Is it possible to board a minibus with a dog?

Yes, this is almost always possible. But just in case, discuss this issue with your instructor in advance.

To the Carpathians in your own car

Can I come to the Carpathians by my own car? Where should I leave it?

Yes, of course. The car can be parked in Ivano-Frankivsk. It costs 75 UAH per day in paid parking in the city center and almost free on the outskirts. The second option is to leave the car in one of the villages at the foot of the mountain you are going to climb. In any village you can easily find a yard where, for a small fee, you can park your car for the duration of your hike.

How can I meet the group if I go by car?

Arrange in advance with the instructor about the time and place of meeting. Most likely, the group will pick you up, pick you up, and you will ride the last couple of kilometers before the start along with everyone else.
