How to climb Hoverla on your own?

How to climb Hoverla on your own?

Is it possible to climb the highest mountain in Ukraine on your own, without a guide and without problems? Yes, it's quite possible. Especially if you spend a little time on preparation, plan everything and stock up on a good map. Perhaps our FAQ on climbing Hoverla will help you with this.

Which route to choose?

There are many different routes to Hoverla. But if you are going to the mountain for the first time, then you should choose the simplest and most popular route - the ascent through the Zarosliak tourist center.

How long does it take to climb?

Usually it takes 3 hours to climb, tourists spend 1 hour at the top, and 2 hours to descend. In bad weather, the ascent may take longer. It is better to start early in the morning - this way you have a better chance of returning before dark and catching good morning weather.

How difficult is the climb?

To climb Hoverla you do NOT need to be a rock climber, jump over an abyss or perform other feats. If you strictly follow the route and follow the path, then all difficulties will be within reason. Just not a very comfortable path underfoot (rocks, mud, roots), just not the most comfortable weather (too hot or too cold) and just shortness of breath and heaviness in the legs. A little tedious, but completely doable.

Is it difficult to find your way there? Can you get lost?

In clear weather, and especially on a public holiday, Hoverla is easy to navigate. The trail is marked (colored marks) and there are tons of people everywhere. You just follow the crowd and that’s it. However, in the mountains the weather can deteriorate at any moment - visibility will become zero and the previously obvious route will turn into a severe test. You can get lost, go astray and end up on dangerous rocky cliffs. Therefore, it is very important to study the route in advance, download a good map (or rather a GPS navigator with a map) into your smartphone and practice using it.

Which card should I choose?

There is almost no mobile communication on the slopes of Hoverla, so your map should work well without the Internet. The offline maps that work well here are Organic Maps, OsmAnd and Locus Map: all three use OpenStreetMap data, where Carpathian trails and their waymarks are mapped in detail. Google Maps also lets you save a map area offline, but it has no mountain trails, so it is of little use on the slope. If you doubt your ability to navigate, consider hiring a private guide or joining a tour to Hoverla.

What time of year is suitable for climbing?

If you are new to tourism, then the best time to go to Hoverla is in the summer (from early June to mid-September). In winter there are avalanche-prone areas, in spring there is still a lot of snow, and autumn very quickly turns into winter.

What is the weather like in Hoverla?

At the summit of Hoverla it is on average 8-10 degrees colder than in the foothills (at an altitude of 600-800 metres). So, to roughly estimate the weather, you can look at the forecast for Vorokhta (the nearest large populated area) and subtract 8-10 degrees from it. It is important - no matter what the forecast is, you must be prepared for rain and wind.

What to take with you

In summer, for a one-day climb to Hoverla you will need: a bottle of water (at least 2 liters per person), a lunch snack, a plastic raincoat, a windbreaker jacket, comfortable sneakers, a phone with a map, a power bank for recharging. You may also need: a hat, trekking poles or a staff, a flashlight, gloves, a reliable guide:)

How to get to Hoverla?

The only way to the Zarosliak base, where the climb to Hoverla begins, is a single dead-end road up the Prut valley through the checkpoint of the Carpathian National Nature Park. The last 8 kilometres past the checkpoint are gravel, rocks and potholes: a normal car will make it, but slowly and carefully. There are no scheduled buses to Zarosliak, so it is either a taxi or your own car. The road really is bad, so taxi drivers charge accordingly. You can get to Vorokhta itself by train (from Kyiv, Kharkiv, Poltava) or by bus (from Ivano-Frankivsk). For distances, road conditions and taxi prices see our separate article on how to get to Hoverla.

Do you need any special permission or pass to climb Hoverla?

On the way to Zarosliak you pass the barrier at the checkpoint of the Carpathian National Nature Park (a national park, not the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve - that is a different protected area, near Rakhiv). You register there and pay the recreation fee: roughly 100 UAH per adult, less for children and students. The park revises its rates every year, so check the amount before you travel, and bring cash. Parking at Zarosliak is charged separately - 50 UAH for a car. Please note that when a storm warning is issued or there is a high probability of floods or avalanches, rescuers often close the entrance to the park.

Is it possible to arrive in the Carpathians, go to Hoverla and go home in one day?

Yes, it's possible. To do this, you need to arrive in Ivano-Frankivsk early in the morning (at 5-6 am), take a taxi to Hoverla (very expensive, because it’s not close), get on the route no later than 11 am, go down to Zarosliak by 5 pm, jump into a taxi (agree in advance) and be in Ivano-Frankivsk around 8 pm. The plan is intense and costly, but quite realistic.

What's the best way to plan your trip?

In my opinion, you will enjoy your trip more if you take your time. Arrive in the Carpathians a day earlier, settle in Vorokhta, rest before the ascent (or vice versa, take a walk in the surrounding hills) and only the next morning move to Hoverla.
