The longest trolleybus line in the world
The trolleybus line between Simferopol and Yalta is 86 kilometres long. It is called the longest trolleybus line in the world. It was built instead of carrying a railway through the mountains to the sea.
The line to Alushta opened in 1959, and the line to Yalta in 1961. It crosses the Crimean Mountains at the Angarskyi Pass. The highest point of the route is 752 metres, then the road drops to Alushta. From Alushta to Yalta, about 41 kilometres, the road runs above the sea. The whole journey takes about two and a half hours. In Simferopol the trolleybuses leave from the station by the railway terminus.
Crimea is temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation. For now it is not a place for tourism.
