Matterhorn: guided climbs suspended after Italian-side rockfall
On 5–6 August 2026 a large rockfall hit the Italian south face of the Matterhorn near Cervinia. Local mountain guides suspended all guided Matterhorn climbs until conditions stabilize. The Lion Ridge normal route was not damaged, but climbers are strongly discouraged. The Carrel Hut remains open as an unstaffed bivouac. Extreme heat and thawing permafrost are cited as contributing factors; no injuries were reported.
