Visa requirements for entering Ukraine

This page is about entering Ukraine. The rule depends on the passport and it changes, so check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs table before you travel. There is no visa on arrival at an airport.

Who does not need a visa

Citizens of the European Union, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland enter without a visa. So do citizens of the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, Israel, Turkey, Georgia, Moldova and a number of other countries. For most of them the stay is up to 90 days within any 180 days. Some countries have a shorter limit, so the row for your country in the MFA table matters more than the general rule.

British citizens are visa-free as well: up to 90 days within 180 days. Presidential decree No. 921/2025 extended that regime until 30 January 2027. The MFA website may still mention 30 January 2025. That was the previous end date.

The full list is the entry regime by country (the table is in Ukrainian). A shorter English note is on the visa information page.

Who needs a visa

If your country is not on the visa-free list, apply before the trip. There is no visa on arrival. Some countries can use the electronic visa at evisa.mfa.gov.ua. A single-entry e-Visa costs 20 US dollars, a double-entry one costs 30. Urgent processing doubles the fee. An e-Visa is short, usually up to 30 days, and it does not replace a type D visa for a long stay.

Consulates and visa centres also take applications. Look up the mission on the MFA website. For the United Kingdom that is uk.mfa.gov.ua.

Citizens of the Russian Federation need a visa. Ukrainian diplomatic missions in Russia are closed. Apply in a third country where you hold a residence permit, or through a visa centre if the MFA lists one.

How to enter during the war

Ukraine's airspace is closed to civil aviation, and there are no scheduled passenger flights. Entry is through land border crossings, above all from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova. Check with the State Border Guard Service which crossings are open that week.

Your passport should be valid for the whole trip. At the border you may be asked for the purpose of the visit, a return ticket or a place to stay, and money for the stay. You do not register with the police in every town. A hotel reports its guests.

Insurance

Medical insurance covering at least 30,000 euros for the length of the stay is a required document for a visa and an e-Visa. Carry a policy on a visa-free trip as well: the border may ask for it, and treatment without insurance is paid by the traveller. Cover for cancellation and theft is separate and optional.

Crimea

Crimea and Sevastopol are Ukrainian territory, temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation. For now it is not a place for tourism.

Open the MFA table again before you leave. The regime can change without a long notice.
