Tip from a weekend hike leader
Weekend hikes are one of the most widespread and accessible forms of organizing active recreation for workers. Participation in weekend hikes should educate workers in the spirit of love for the Motherland, loyalty to high principles, and instill respect for nature and cultural monuments.
Weekend hikes are the first stage of tourism. They prepare participants for long journeys, help them master tourist skills, and provide the necessary physical training.
On a weekend trip, tourists get acquainted with their native land: with characteristic and picturesque landscapes, with places covered with the revolutionary, military and labor glory of the Soviet people, with historical and cultural monuments and advanced state farms.
For tourists, weekend hikes allow them to stay in good shape all year round.
Any citizen of the USSR can participate in hikes organized by tourist clubs.
Participants of hikes who have reached the age of 14, who have completed at least five hikes or one multi-day hike, with a length of at least 75 km, and who have passed the test in the basics of tourism, are entitled to receive the “Tourist of the USSR” badge.
Special weekend trips are organized for parents with school-aged children.
The success of the trip depends, first of all, on the thoroughness of preparation for it.
2. Preparation for the hike.
The leader should carefully study everything related to the intended route (from literature, maps and other sources) and first go through the route himself.
When studying the planned hiking route, you must:
Pay attention to the nature of the terrain: the degree of ruggedness of the terrain, the ratio of forest and open landscapes, the presence of rivers, streams, lakes, swamps, as well as means of crossing them, ensuring the safety of tourists.
— Provide for the route to pass outside protected areas and other areas closed to visitors.
— Outline the group’s route through the most picturesque places, bypassing populated areas if possible, if they do not have sightseeing objects.
— Establish the presence, theme and possibility of visiting excursion sites located along the group’s route. The leader must be sufficiently knowledgeable about the attractions located along the route to convey information about them or provide links to sources of information.
— Approximately outline the place and time of a large halt, and in a multi-day hike, overnight stays.
— When conducting a hike with socially useful work, determine in advance the nature of the work and provide equipment.
3. Group gathering.
The group will gather at suburban ticket offices of train stations, railway platforms, bus stops, metro stations, and marinas.
The time and place of the meeting are announced in advance in the calendar, and may also be broadcast by the media or posted on notice boards.
The advertisement must contain the necessary information about the topic of the hike, its length, the nature of the terrain, the method of transportation (on foot, on skis, etc.); requirements of the route for the preparedness of the hike participants. The last name of the hike leader is indicated. If the fare is more than 2 rubles round trip, the amount of transportation costs is indicated.
For overnight hikes, pre-registration must be made, indicating the place and time of registration in the advertisement. This measure is necessary in order to promptly provide the group with equipment, distribute responsibilities among group members and organize normal collective meals.
During the recording, the leader inquires about the health of each participant, provides general information about the hike, the place and time of collection and, if required, the need to purchase tickets in advance.
The collection time is scheduled at least 15 minutes before the departure of the vehicle.
During the group meeting, the leader must have a badge.
Anyone wishing to take part in the hike, upon arriving at the gathering place, must approach the leader. The leader has the right not to allow participation in a hike by persons who, in his opinion, are not prepared for this hike (insufficiently trained, with obvious signs of ill health, dressed and wearing shoes that are not appropriate for the season, etc.).
Participation in the hike by persons who appear at the gathering place in a drunken state is unacceptable.
If a participant’s unpreparedness is revealed during the hike, the leader has the right to remove him from the route and direct him to the nearest public transport stop.
The leader informs the participants of the trip with information regarding payment of travel, indicates the train and carriage intended for boarding, and the station where the group should get off the transport.
Participants of the trip board the transport as soon as they purchase tickets.
The station - the starting point of the route - must correspond to that announced in the plan and cannot be changed without sufficient justification.
If the group is large, the leader warns tourists in advance about the need to exit the cars dispersedly at the destination station, so as not to cause a long train delay.
4. Movement along the route.
At the beginning of the hike, the leader introduces himself to the group, talks about the purpose of the hike and the upcoming route (routine and pace of movement, nature of the terrain, sightseeing objects, time and duration of a long rest, time of return to the station, etc.). Here he completes the entry into the route list of the participants of the hike, appoints a trail runner and his assistants.
During a hike, the leader is either at the head of the group, showing the way, or where it is more convenient for him to lead when it is necessary to ensure traffic safety (at a crossing, on a steep descent, on a narrow path, etc.).
The leader crosses the obstacles encountered along the way (fords, swamps, etc.) first or entrusts this to an experienced tourist. If necessary, insurance and mutual assistance are organized; Special attention is paid to inexperienced and elderly tourists. The group does not leave the place until its last member crosses the obstacle.
When driving on motor roads, the group should move on the left side of the road without interfering with oncoming traffic.
Crossing the roadway must be done at pedestrian crossings or in places at least 100 m away from the turns on both sides. The group, previously pulled up to the crossing point, at the signal from the leader, quickly crosses the road, while one tourist with a red flag is placed to the right and left of the group.
When moving without roads through a dense forest, the group should walk compactly; the manager, if necessary, gives signals by voice or whistle; The leader must promptly give a signal to the leader about the break of the group while following the route.
The leader must ensure that the group, moving along the route, does not cause damage to vegetation, both cultivated and wild.
Collecting plants is strictly prohibited.
In summer, if the route passes near bodies of water or rivers suitable for swimming, it is recommended to allow time for this.
Before swimming, the leader, with the help of several good swimmers from among the tourists, examines the swimming area in order to identify dangerous areas, and if the opportunity arises, inquires from local residents about the nature of this body of water.
During the hike, the leader should make 10-15 minute stops for short rest at least every hour and a half. Short stops are required at the beginning of the hike, before approaching populated areas and at the end of the route so that the hikers can get themselves in order.
Places for short rest should be dry, shaded, and level. The rest time is calculated from the moment the last person in the group approaches.
The leader warns tourists about the need to be careful on the water, about the inadmissibility of swimming beyond the designated landmarks, determines the duration of stay in the water and appoints the required number of duty officers who can swim well, whose task is to monitor swimmers from the shore in order to provide immediate assistance if required. After all swimmers have left the water, the persons on duty are given time to swim.
It is advisable to choose a place to spend the night (if it is provided for during the hike) so that you have time to finish the movement and set up a bivouac before dark. The resting place should be dry, protected from the wind, with a sufficient amount of fuel, near water suitable for food purposes, upstream of a populated area along the river.
In the summer, the morning rise should be arranged as early as possible in order to cover most of the route before the heat sets in.
In the middle of the day a big stop is organized. When drawing up a schedule for the route, it is advisable to calculate the time of the big stop so that it begins when most of the path has already been completed.
5. Big break.
The requirements for a large resting place are the same as for a place to spend the night.
Immediately after stopping for a big rest, the leader announces its duration and the time of leaving the rest.
During a campfire hike, the leader distributes the responsibilities for setting up a fire and cooking food among all camp participants. The manager indicates where drinking water should be taken from, and also determines the place for the fire, observing all fire safety measures, preventing the cutting of trees and bushes, and the use of firewood prepared by the population; Ensures that wood cutting is carried out. in a certain place and the resting place was not clogged with wood chips, etc.
When setting fires, the following conditions are observed:
- fires should be made at a distance from trees and bushes (5-6 m) so that their roots and crowns are not damaged;
— it is advisable to make fires in the place of the previous ones;
- if a fire is lit in a new place, it is necessary to first remove the turf in order to cover the fireplace with it after the fire is extinguished.
The leader appoints one experienced tourist as a fireman, whose responsibilities include lighting and maintaining the fire.
Before leaving the rest stop, the leader instructs the tourists to clean up the rest area (bury pre-burnt metal cans and other non-combustible waste; burn paper, boxes and other flammable waste; put leftovers suitable for food for forest animals in a secluded place; collect and carefully fold unused fuel). After finishing cleaning, you must carefully extinguish the fire.
Before leaving, the leader checks the condition of the resting place left by the group.
Prohibited:
— Make fires in forested suburban areas and in recreation areas.
— Leave or bury glass jars or broken glass (for example: broken thermos flasks). All this should be taken with you from the resting place in order to throw it away where there are garbage containers or other garbage collections.
The use of water for food purposes is allowed only from obviously clean sources (wells, springs, springs, etc.).
6. On organizing hikes for parents with school-age children.
Hiking for parents with school-age children is one of the forms of organizing family recreation for workers.
