FAQFrequently asked questions

What is Petra and what is she famous for?

This is an ancient city in Jordan, carved right into the rocks. It was once the capital of the Nabatean kingdom, and later an important Roman city. In 1985, it was taken under the wing of UNESCO, and in 2007 it was chosen as one of the Seven New Wonders of the World - so the company in Petra is serious.

Why did the city end up right here, in a deep gorge?

Because two trade arteries crossed here: from the Red Sea to Damascus and from the Persian Gulf to Gaza. Caravans were overcoming the hell of the Arabian desert, and coolness and water awaited them in Petra - an ideal stop.

How do you even get there?

Through the narrow Sik canyon with rocky walls up to 60 meters high. The city itself lies at an altitude of more than 900 meters, so the walk will be uphill - take comfortable shoes.

What must be seen?

El Khazneh (the so-called Treasury) is a 1st-century temple with a carved facade, which you will recognize even if you have never heard of Petra. Then Ed-Dair monastery, Roman theater and colonnades. All this was carved in stone by hand, not with an excavator.

Why did such a big city empty?

When the Romans groped for sea routes to the east, the overland spice trade began to fade. The caravans disappeared, along with the money - the city was gradually abandoned. Now about half a million tourists come here a year, but for impressions, not for spices.
