FAQFrequently asked questions

What is Muktinath and what makes it special?

This is an ancient Vishnu temple in the Mustang district of Nepal, revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. A case of rare religious agreement: for some it is the abode of Vishnu, for others it is a manifestation of Avalokiteshvara.

At what height does it stand?

About 3,762 meters above sea level, at the foot of Torong La Pass. This is one of the tallest temples in the world, so shortness of breath here is part of the pilgrimage experience.

What is worth seeing on the spot?

108 fountains (mukti-dhar) under which pilgrims bathe in turn, and the temple of Jwala Mai with an eternal fire burning on natural gas directly from the ground. Water and fire nearby - exactly what they come here for.

How to get here?

The temple lies in the Muktinath Valley near the Thorong La Pass, so it is usually visited while trekking around Annapurna or on a separate route through Mustang. They don't get here quickly and by accident.

Are there any interesting historical legends here?

According to legend, Padmasambhava, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism, meditated here on his way to Tibet. Tibetans call the place Chuming Gyatsa, that is, the Hundred Springs.
