Monte Civetta
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Monte Civeta and how high is it?
This is a 3,220-meter-high mountain in the Dolomites, in northern Italy (province of Belluno). The name Civetta means owl in Italian, so don't be surprised if the locals refer to you as a bird thing.
What is this mountain famous for?
First of all, it is considered one of the symbols of the Dolomites due to its north-western wall, about a thousand meters high. It was here in 1925 that Emil Zolleder and Gustle Lettenbauer first climbed the route, which gave rise to the sixth category of difficulty in mountaineering.
How to get there and where to look at it?
A convenient viewing point is the Taibon-Agordino valley. Mountain paths and shelters lead closer to the mountain, so you should get there from the Agordo side.
When is the best time to go?
Summer and early fall are the safest time for hiking and climbing when the trails are clear of snow. In winter, it is more suitable for skiers and those who like to look at the wall from below.
Were there loud events here?
In 1969, Georgian climber Mykhailo Khergiani died on the mountain. And in 2013, an entire rock tower - about 400 meters high - collapsed from the north-western side, fortunately without casualties.
