What is Lake Braies and where is it?

This is a mountain lake in the Dolomites, in the north of Italy (South Tyrol), at an altitude of about 1496 m. It is surrounded by dolomite rocks on three sides, and the water has a characteristic emerald-green color.

How big and deep is it?

The lake is small - about 1.2 km long and 300-400 m wide, with an area of about 31 hectares. But it is deep: up to 36 m in the deepest place.

How do I get there and is it easy to park?

They approach from the north through the Prags valley. Just keep in mind: due to the influx of tourists in the peak season, the entry of cars is limited, and parking must be booked in advance and is not cheap. One day in August once gathered almost 18 thousand visitors - so early arrival saves.

What to do there?

Go around the lake on foot (the western shore is flat, the eastern shore is narrow and with steps), rent a rowing boat or, if you come in winter, try curling on the frozen water. The well-known route Alta Via 1 to Belluno starts from here.

When is it better to go and should you beware of winter?

In summer it is beautiful, but crowded; it is quieter in spring and autumn. In the winter, the east coast trails are often closed due to avalanche danger, so don't be surprised by barriers. By the way, the fame of the lake was added to the Italian series Un passo dal cielo, after which bloggers came here with cameras.
