Together, they cover about 207 square meters. km, and the largest of them, Sjöndre Folgefonna (167 sq. km), is the third largest glacier in mainland Norway.

How thick is this ice?

In places, the thickness of the ice reaches 375 meters. That is, under your feet you have more than half a kilometer of frozen water, which has not been in a hurry for thousands of years.

How to get there and what to see?

A convenient starting point is the town of Odda. From there, most travelers walk to the Boarbreen glacier tongue; another available branch is Bondhusbreen. The melting waters of Buarbreen feed Lake Sandvinvatnet.

When is the best time to go and is it possible to go skiing?

It is best in summer - then the hiking trails and the summer ski center on the northern part of the glacier are open. Yes, you read that right: skiing in the middle of summer.

Is this a protected area?

Yes, in 2005 the Folgefonna National Park was established here. And the water from the glacier springs is even bottled under the Isklar brand - they literally sell a piece of the glacier.
