FAQFrequently asked questions

What is the Grand Canyon and where is it?

This is one of the deepest canyons on the planet in the northwest of the American state of Arizona. The Colorado River cut through it, and the elevation of the plateau helped to dig deeper - in places up to 1,600 meters down.

How big is it?

About 466 km long, 8-25 km wide along the edges of the plateau and less than a kilometer near the bottom. You won't be able to glance at it all at once - the scale is not for one selfie.

Why are the walls so striped?

These are layers of limestone, sandstone, and shale that accumulated over millions of years, and then the river cut through it all. In essence, you are looking at geological chronology in a section.

When is the best time to go and what to expect from the weather?

Get ready for the contrast: up on the plateau it can be about 15 degrees, and at the bottom of the canyon - all +40. So dress in layers and don't underestimate the descent, because coming back from the bottom is always harder.

Is this a protected area?

Yes, since 1917 it has been a national park, and since 1979 the canyon has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List. More than 2 million people come here every year, so it is not always possible to be alone with nature.
