What is Kachkar-Dag and what is its height?
This is the highest peak of the Kachkar Mountains in northeastern Turkey - 3937 meters. The mountain is part of the Pontic ridge, which stretches along the Black Sea for almost a thousand kilometers.
Where is it and how to get there?
Kachkar-Dag is located in Rize province, about 40 km from the Black Sea coast. The nearest big cities are Rize (70 km) and Trabzon (120 km). The standard climb to the top starts from the village of Yukari-Kavrun along the northeastern ridge.
When is it better to go to the mountains?
The season for trekking is from June to September, while the snow melts and the passes are passable. During the rest of the year, there are winter conditions here, so it makes little sense to freeze without a reason.
What should you know about routes and equipment?
The mountains are heavily glaciated, so serious climbs require an ice ax and cats. From the Black Sea side, the trails are easier and suitable for beginners, while the approaches from the Chorokha Valley are steeper and require experience.
What is interesting about this place, apart from the mountain itself?
There are dozens of mountain lakes, glaciers, high mountain pastures (yayls) and blooming rhododendrons all around. There are bears, wolves and wild boars in the forests, and the name of the mountain comes from the Armenian khachkar - "stone-cross".
