The volcano Gunung Gamkonora on Halmager comes to life - tourist routes are blocked
Badan Geologi has raised the activity status of Gunung Gamkonora, located in Kabupaten Halmahera Barat County, Maluku Utara Province, from Normal Level 1 to Alert Level 2. The security regime change took effect on November 6, 2026.
Due to the threat of an eruption, representatives of the local observation post announced a complete suspension of hiking to the summit and suspended the issuance of permits for active recreation near the crater. A two-kilometer danger zone was established around the center of the eruption, where travelers and locals are completely prohibited from staying.
The decision was made after a spike in seismic activity was recorded: starting on October 29, 2026, the average daily number of shallow volcanic tremors increased from less than two to nine events per day, and deep tremors also became more frequent.

Context
Under normal security measures, travelers were allowed to approach the crater within a mile. Recent visual observations have recorded white smoke rising from the summit Gunung Gamkonora under pressure to a height of 30 to 50 meters.
