Fatal swim near Essaouira: tourist dies on Moroccan coast
A German tourist in her twenties died while on vacation in the Moroccan province of Essaouira. The tragedy occurred on Tuesday on the Tamzgida-Uftas beach.
According to eyewitnesses, the woman went swimming, but almost immediately after entering the ocean, she was swept away by a strong current. She could not cope with the powerful movement of the water and drowned.
Royal Gendarmerie officers from Tamanar arrived at the scene. They lifted the drowned woman's body to land with the help of another vacationer who was surfing nearby. Context
The wild beach of Tamzgida-Uftas is located on the Atlantic coast south of Essaouira, near the town of Tamanar. This coastal area is sandwiched between mountain slopes and cliffs with natural grottoes and fishing caves, which are accessed by steep dirt roads. Due to its remoteness, there is no classic resort infrastructure, and the ocean waters are known for strong waves and undercurrents that attract surfers, but carry significant risks for ordinary swimming.
