Showers and thunderstorms in Madeira - forecasters have declared a yellow danger level
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere has issued a yellow weather alert for the southern coast and mountainous areas of Madeira Island, with forecasters predicting intermittent heavy showers, accompanied by thunderstorms in some places.
The warning is in effect from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, and will be reinstated from midnight to 3 p.m. on Friday, November 6. Local authorities reminded people to follow previously issued weather advisories, warning of possible worsening weather conditions over the weekend.

Context
Madeira's terrain is characterized by sharp elevation changes and numerous microclimate zones, which makes the weather in the highlands and on the coast significantly different. The island's steep volcanic slopes are vulnerable to sudden rockfalls, landslides, and the overflowing of mountain streams during rainfall.
Because of this, the Madeira Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) promptly restricts traffic or completely closes classified PR hiking routes in adverse weather conditions - in particular, trails along traditional irrigation canals (levadas) and crossings between peaks.
