In the morning, the volcano Popocatépetl threw out an ash cloud that moved in a northwesterly direction directly towards the country's capital.
Secretaría de Gestión Integral de Riesgos y Protección Civil warned that ashfall would affect areas in the south and southeast of Ciudad de México and would last at least until the evening. The areas affected were Iztapalapa, Milpa Alta, Tláhuac, Tlalpan and Xochimilco.
Local authorities urged people to close doors and windows, not go outdoors without protecting their eyes, nose, and mouth, and to securely cover street water tanks.
