Tragedy on Mount Snowdon: Police error delayed rescuers' arrival
Two friends, aged 19 and 20, have died while climbing Mount Snowdon. The tragic incident came amid delays in providing emergency medical assistance.
As it turned out, the rescue operation in the mountains was significantly delayed due to a police error when processing a 999 message.
Context
Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) in the Eryri National Park is the highest peak in Wales and is served by the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team. The service operates entirely as a volunteer charity with no direct government funding and is considered the busiest of all mountain rescue teams in the UK, handling over three hundred calls a year.
In the UK, calling mountain rescuers via the 999 service has a special procedure: first, the operator switches the subscriber to the police, who record the coordinates of the incident and only then officially transfers the task to the appropriate volunteer group on duty.
