Popular gorge in Oak Creek Canyon to remain closed until 2027
The Coconino Forest Service has extended a closure order for the West Fork Trail and adjacent river in Oak Creek Canyon until February 28, 2027. The popular recreation area was hit in the summer of 2026 by the Pocket Fire, after which seasonal monsoon rains triggered severe flooding.
Prolonged storms have washed massive rock debris and forest mud onto the hiking trail, creating hazardous conditions for travel. Restoration will require extensive clearing, pavement repairs, and likely rerouting of part of the route.
A separate reason for the long pause is the area's status as critical habitat for the endangered narrow-headed garter snake. Before allowing tourists, rangers must formally consult with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
