In the area of the municipality of Sant'Eufemia a Maiella, mountain rescuers conducted a night operation to search for five tourists from Rome who were unable to continue their hike on the Maiella massif on their own.

The group set out in the morning with the intention of climbing to the top of Mount Amaro. However, on the steep climb of Rava del Farro at an altitude of about 2,600 meters above sea level, the tourists became exhausted, very cold and wet. At around 19:00, they sent a signal for help.

Three groups of the National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps, as well as a unit of the Financial Guard, set out on foot to respond to the call. After overcoming a lengthy ascent at night, the specialists found the people near the plateau of Mount Amaro, checked their condition, secured them, and led them down on foot.

Context

The Couloir of Rava del Ferro (in the local dialect "rava" means steep rocky ravine or scree) serves as one of the shortest and at the same time most strenuous direct routes to the summit of Monte Amaro. The B5 trail starts from the beech forest of the Lama Bianca nature reserve near Sant'Eufemia a Majella and overcomes about 1300 meters of elevation gain directly along the loose rocky slope.

Mount Amaro (2793 m) is the highest point of the Majella massif and the second highest peak in the Apennines after Corno Grande. Due to the considerable steepness of the slopes, sometimes reaching 25–30%, the mobile scree and the open nature of the terrain, this climb belongs to the category of routes for experienced hikers.
