Utah: fall from Red Hollow near Cedar City
On 1 October 2026 around 7 a.m., a 20-year-old hiker fell about 100 feet (~30 m) from a trail in the Red Hollow area near Cedar City (Iron County, Utah) — roughly two miles up Cedar Canyon off state Route 14.
Local reports say she was hiking with friends before dawn to watch the sunrise over the canyon. After the fall she was partly wedged between a rock and the cliff face.
The Iron County Sheriff’s Office sent its Ropes Team and Search and Rescue: crews extracted her, secured her in a Stokes basket and lowered her to the canyon floor. Officials said she had a head injury and was conscious but confused about what had happened.
An Intermountain Life Flight helicopter then flew her to a hospital in the St. George area. SR-14 was closed briefly so the aircraft could land. Gold Cross Ambulance, Utah Highway Patrol and sheriff’s deputies also took part.
The sheriff’s office reminded visitors that Red Hollow has become a popular sunrise spot for students and others, with steep ground and sheer drop-offs. Stay on established safe routes and avoid hiking near edges in darkness or low visibility.
