ÖAV huts: more overnight stays, less water
The Österreichischer Alpenverein (ÖAV) reviewed summer 2026 at its 223 huts (~10,000 beds). After the 2025 record (~384,000 overnight stays) it expects about another +5%; final figures for every hut are still coming in. Some huts stay open into early November. Guests skew younger and more international (Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Czechia, UK; a rising share from the USA).
Cancellations and no-shows remain an issue, though after June rates of 30–40% the summer eased. At Wangenitzsee-Hütte (~50 beds) hosts saw about 20% cancellations and even 13 no-shows in one day; groups still book eight beds and arrive as five. ÖAV again asks for responsible booking.
Drought tightened water on high and karst huts: at Pühringer-Hütte toilets were sometimes switched off and buckets used; at Wangenitzsee-Hütte in June–July the old glacier spring delivered less water on hot days. Shower limits and guest cooperation kept operations running. ÖAV with DAV and Alpenverein Südtirol also pushed bed-bug awareness (six suspected reports across 223 huts) to stop spread between shelters. Destination overview: Alps.
