Accidents in the Tatras and Slovenský raj

· Tatras · Safety & hazards

On 7 October in the High Tatras below Poľský hrebeň, a 30-year-old Israeli hiker fell on a snowfield and injured his head and both arms. Horska záchranná služba (HZS) with a helicopter crew from Banská Bystrica flew him to Poprad hospital. Four others from the same group were stuck on the blue trail between Prielom saddle and Zamrznutý kotol: snow and locally hard firn, plus inadequate gear, blocked both descent and the ridge. Rescuers warmed them and brought them out via Sliezsky dom to Starý Smokovec.

On 8 October near Chata pod Kráľovou hoľou (Low Tatras) a 41-year-old Slovak woman fell from her bike, hurt her hip and could not ride on — HZS splinted the injury and handed her to an ambulance in Šumiac. On 9 October in Slovenský raj below Tomášovský výhľad, rescuers found the body of a 50-year-old Slovak man with no signs of life after hikers reported an abandoned backpack. Circumstances are under investigation; HZS expressed condolences to the family.

Northern High Tatras valleys still hold snow and firn — HZS urges planning trips for current conditions.
