Sherpa found alive after 6 days on Everest

· Nepal · Safety & hazards

Nepali guide Hillary Dawa Sherpa was found alive on 4 June near Everest Base Camp — about a week after he was last seen descending above Camp 3, around 7,500 m. His client and others in the group reached the bottom; the climbing season was ending and the route was being dismantled. His family in Kathmandu had already begun funeral rites.

He told the BBC his bottled oxygen ran out and he could not keep walking: two days with no food, then chewing ice and a few chocolates from his pocket. On the way down he fell into a crevasse and spent about two and a half days trapped there until avalanche snow filled the gap enough for him to climb out. He then followed ropes through the Khumbu Icefall. A Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee clean-up crew spotted him; he was later flown to HAMS Hospital in Kathmandu with dehydration, frostbite and a fracture. 8K Expeditions called it a true self-rescue.

This is a commercial summit-climbing story, not a walking trek to base camp. For hikers heading into the Everest region we run an Everest Base Camp trek — without the Khumbu Icefall or high camps above EBC.
