Yosemite Dome Fire closes Glacier Point Road and southern trails

By the morning of 28 September the Dome Fire in Yosemite National Park covered about 2,110 hectares (5,215 acres). Thirty percent of the edge was contained, with 808 people on the line. The burned area had grown by about 164 hectares since the previous morning. The fire is moving slowly north and northeast. Roads, buildings and utilities are not under immediate threat, and the park itself is open as usual.

Glacier Point Road is closed: smoke has cut visibility, and fire crews need the road clear. There is no reopening date. Hikers can still reach Glacier Point on the Four Mile Trail and the Panorama Trail. People who had already left a car overnight at Glacier Point may drive out.

In the south, the trail to Chilnualna Falls is closed, along with the paths from its top toward Buena Vista Lake and Crescent Lake. Those lakes can still be reached from the east. The Ostrander Lake Trail and everything south of it are closed, as is the strip east of Wawona Road between Wawona and Chinquapin. Mariposa-Yosemite Airport is closed to civilian aircraft: they may not take off or land.

Smoke that morning: air at Tuolumne Meadows, El Portal, Hodgdon Meadow and Mariposa was rated good, and the valley moderate. At Wawona, evening and overnight periods may be unhealthy for sensitive groups.
