Four deaths on Manaslu so far this autumn season

The death toll on Manaslu (8,163 m), the world’s eighth-highest mountain, has reached four this autumn. During the night of 20 September, an avalanche buried a tent at Camp III occupied by climber Dhruva Jyoti Guha and his Nepali guide Fursemba Sherpa. Rescuers found them after contact with the team was lost.

Heavy snowfall prompted many expedition members to descend from the upper camps to base camp. Six climbers from the same group who retreated from Camp II were unharmed.

Singaporean climber Lau Wee Seng and Nepali porter Tashi Sherpa had died on Manaslu earlier this season. A relatively favourable weather window is forecast for 21–23 September, and some teams are preparing summit attempts.

Nepal has issued 493 permits for Manaslu this autumn; more than 500 Nepali guides are also working on the season’s expeditions.
