Where to buy gas cylinders in Iceland

Where to buy gas cylinders in Iceland

I hasten to assure you that in Iceland there are no problems with gas for burners. There there are problems with prices. Gas cylinders in a variety of formats (threaded, collet dichlorvos, coleman) are sold in campsites, supermarkets and information centers. And the whole difficulty lies in how to find the cheapest gas being limited in time.

Camping in Reykjavik

The central city campsite in Reykjavik is the place through which so or otherwise no less than 90% of trekkers in Iceland pass.  And Of course, at the camping reception they sell gas and refined gasoline for multi-fuel burners. This is very convenient, since the reception The campsite is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And they have gas reserves decent. So whenever you come, be sure that you can buy gas cylinders here. But unfortunately, this point is not only the most convenient, but also the most expensive. A 450 gram threaded cylinder costs 2500 here crowns, i.e. about 25 dollars!!  For reference, at our house 450 gram gas cylinder of some not very pretentious manufacturer can be purchased for $7. Those. gas prices at the campsite simply transcendental. If you have a multi-fuel burner, then it is more profitable to take liter of purified gasoline (aka “galosh” or white gas), which is available at the campsite costs 2700 ISK. But if time allows you, you can visit There are several more retail outlets where there is a chance to find gas cheaper.

By the way, the cheapest gas, oddly enough, can also be produced in the city camping in Reykjavik. Next to the kitchen there is a special shelf for FREE gas. When tourists fly home, they leave on this shelf unused cylinders and if you're lucky, you can find a couple of them here completely empty cans. Don’t think that there will be such a ball all the time - from all shelters and campsites on the track Laugavegur only in Landmannalaugar there is a real chance to make money started cylinders. And at other points the flow of people leaving (who leave gas) is not intense enough to provide high the probability of finding a non-empty cylinder on Free shelf.

Supermarket Bonus

Bonus supermarkets are considered the cheapest stores in Iceland. It is not surprising that gas is the cheapest here. One day I discovered there threaded cylinders for 498 CZK (per 450 grams). It's only 5 dollars - cheaper than in Ukraine! But did you notice the word "one day"? Yes - The peculiarity of the Bonus is that, unlike the capital’s campsite, supermarket cannot be counted on. Gas there might cost $5, or maybe and 10 or 20... or he won't be there at all. Of course you can try happiness in another Bonus - there are several of them in Reykjavik. But do you have enough? time? Distances between shops are decent, public transport It’s VERY expensive, and the Bonuses close quite early. So closest to Bonus central camping (2 km on foot, see map below) on weekdays open from 11:00 to 18:30, and even less on weekends.

By the way, pay attention to alternative cylinder formats. Sometimes in stores you can find collet cylinders with butane (also known as Chinese or dichlorvos) at a price of up to 3 dollars per 200-300 grams. Also there are dark green Coleman cylinders in American threaded format MAPP - $9 per 465 grams of propane. And here are the adapters for all this You can’t buy exotics in Iceland; you have to bring them from home.

Gas stations and small shops

Regarding the purchase of gas in Iceland at gas stations, you can calculate with some reservations - there is gas there, but the schedule Shops at gas stations are not open 24/7. But You can buy regular gasoline at these same gas stations at any time and in any container! At least pour it into a plate - after all, most dressings automatic. You pay with a card and pour gasoline into a bottle from multi-fuel burner. However, one day, in a store while filling up the network N1 I came across purified gasoline (white fuel) at a ridiculous price of 1077 CZK per liter

If you are traveling to Landmannalaugar (to the start of the classic trek) on bus, it usually makes a long 20-minute stop in the town Hella. There, right at the bus stop, there is a supermarket with almost normal prices. (1755 CZK for a 450g bottle) and a much more expensive shop at refueling (2595 CZK per cylinder).
