Podobovets ski resort

Podobovets ski resort

A mid-2000s snapshot. Podobovets is located 11 km to the south of the Volovets train station on the Kyiv-Uzhhorod train line. At that time one took a taxi to Podobovets and then a horse-drawn sled another 2 km to the base of the mountain. The village was poor and undeveloped, but lodgings with minimal conveniences could be found in nearly every home.

The single tow lift up the mountain was 1000 m long, with a 230 m elevation rise up to about 1050 m. The top third of the mountain was rather difficult - quite steep and with moguls that could be large (the slope was ungroomed). The middle third is almost flat, and the bottom third has a medium grade. Lower-intermediate skiers got off the tow halfway up to avoid hurting themselves on the top part. There was also a wide, gradual hill off to the side of the mountain that beginners practiced on (but with no lift).

Skis were available for rental at the slope and elsewhere in the village of Podobovets. Most skis were well-worn.

skiukraine.info then offered help booking accommodations in Podobovets through a general form on the site (the page later became unavailable).

Zatyshok

Zatyshok was a hotel on the southern outskirts of Podobovets, about 4 km from the ski slope described above. It was lesser known, and the mountain was less busy. Lines rarely lasted longer than a few minutes. It is 13 km down the road from Volovets towards Mizhhirya at an elevation of 850 m. The tow lift was 700 m long with an elevation drop of 150 m. The mountain was quite interesting for skiers from beginner to upper-intermediate level. There was a nice ski rental at Zatyshok hotel, and locals hung out nearby with skis to rent in their trunks.
