Golden Gate of Kyiv
The Golden Gate is one of Kyiv’s best-known landmarks and a rare example of the defensive architecture of Rus-Ukraine. It stands in the Upper Town, near Saint Sophia Cathedral, at 40A Volodymyrska Street.
History
The main gate of medieval Kyiv was built in the first quarter of the 11th century, during the time of Princes Volodymyr the Great and Yaroslav the Wise. It was the ceremonial entrance to Yaroslav’s City, through which envoys, merchants and formal processions entered Kyiv.
The Church of the Annunciation stood above the passage. Fragments of the original masonry survive. The present reconstruction pavilion was built in 1982; it protects the authentic remains and houses a museum.
What to see
The museum presents the surviving walls and the defensive system of medieval Kyiv. Visitors can also climb to the viewing platform for views across the historic city centre.
