Kyiv Fortress Museum (Kosoi Kaponir)

This part of the city's fortifications was built in 1844, although the structure's history probably has more to do with the fate of defenseless people. It was here that supporters of the tsar carried out executions of political prisoners, including the leaders of a Polish rebellion, in the 1860s. At the beginning of the 20th century, participants in a revolt of the sapper battalion and the Selenginsky Regiment met the same fate. Earlier, ammunition and weapons were also stored in this semi-underground fortress with solid brick and stone walls. As of the mid-2000s, directories listed roughly 10:00-17:00 and Friday closed; check current hours, tickets and access on site. Address from those directories: Hospitalna St., 24A (tel. 235 01 46).
