Brotherhood Epiphany Monastery and Kyiv-Mohyla Academy

Brotherhood Epiphany Monastery and Kyiv-Mohyla Academy

The Kyiv Brotherhood founded the monastery and a school in 1615.

In the 17th century the complex was a cultural and spiritual centre of Ukrainian lands. Thus it had a significant impact on European cultural life.

Famed Ukrainian educator Petro Mohyla was the force behind the founding of the academy. He modelled it on the principles of the best European schools of the times. The school and a university that grew out of it prepared generations of Ukrainian scientists, artists and teachers.

The main temple of the monastery-academy complex, the Epiphany Cathedral, became a victim of political repression in 1935: Stalin's government blew it up. The most important building that still stands is the Old Academic building, founded in 1703; the Annunciation Church was added to it around 1740.
