Pirogoscha Church

Kiev's Prince Mstislaw started the church in 1131.After the Mongol-Tatar invasion, the church became a centre of Kiev social life. Many important celebrations were held there, many notables were buried on the church grounds, and the city archive was kept there. The original building was destroyed in 1935 by Stalinists. The people of Kiev decided to rebuild the church after Soviet rule ended. The restoration was completed in 1998.

 

Pokrovskiy Monastery

Автор: Кирилл Ясько 18.03.2006 This women's monastery was founded in 1889 by Russia's Princess Alexandra Romanova. It has achieved fame for its medical and educational facilities.

For example, the monastery hospital was the first in Kiev to have X-ray equipment. Lots of well-known scientists and doctors worked in the monastery complex. The famed Ukrainian entrepreneur Nikolay Tereschenko financed the complex's administration building on the foothills of Mount Voznesenskaya.

 

Олекса Довбуш - украинский Робин Гуд

Автор: Кирилл Ясько 16.03.2006 Скалы Довбуша, Пещеры Довбуша, сокровища Довбуша…Как объясняется название "Рахов"? Место, где Довбуш "рахував" (считал) деньги. А почему называется "Диловэ" (село, в котором расположен один из географических центров Европи)? Да потому что Довбуш тут делил деньги. А кто же такой этот Довбуш? Ну, разбойник, украинский Робин Гуд… Житель Западной Укоаины добавит, что Довбуш - это предводитель карпатских опришков. Но и в Восточной, и в Западной Украине мало кто из неисториков может детально рассказать о том, кто такой Довбуш, когда он жил и чем занимался.
Так кто же такой Довбуш?..  

Prut River

Автор: Кирилл Ясько 16.03.2006 Prut River - a major waterway in southwestern Ukraine that eventually flows into the Danube River. It is 910 km long (nearly 240 km are in Ukraine) and drains a basin area of 27,500 sq km (approx 8,000 sq km in Ukraine). Its source is near Mount Hoverlia, and it flows through the Carpathian Mountains, Subcarpathia, and the Pokutian-Bessarabian Upland and Moldavian Upland. The river is the demarcation point for a short section of the Ukrainian-Rumanian border and the length of the Rumanian-Moldovan border. The first section of the Prut (to Deliatyn) flows through narrow mountain valleys and is marked by rapids and waterfalls (near Yaremche). From that point the river widens, although it still has a considerable drop. Fed by rain and meltwater, the Prut freezes over lightly from January to March. The river is used for log rafting. Major centers along its banks include Deliatyn, Kolomyia, Sniatyn, and Chernivtsi.
 

Горганы

Автор: Кирилл Ясько 16.03.2006 Горганы - система горных хребтов внешней части Украинских Карпат в Ивано-Франковской и Закарпатской областях. Расположены между долинами рек Прут, Мизунка и Река. Горганы делятся на Краевые низкогорные, Внешние и Внутренние. Для Горган характерны крутые асимметричные склоны и острые гребни. На реках встречаются пороги, водопады. Встречаются небольшие озера. До высоты 1450 м растут буково-еловые и еловые леса, выше - кустарники, каменные россыпи, изредка луга. Заказник Горганы - общегосударственного значения. Популярный район туризма.

Черногорский горный массив

Автор: Кирилл Ясько 16.03.2006 Черногора - наивысший горный массив в пределах Ивано-Франковской и Закарпатской областей. Тянется на 40 км. между реками Черная Тиса, Белая Тиса, Черный Черемош. Популярный район туризма.
В предгорье располагаются в основном дубовые леса, буковые, сосновые. На реке Прут есть водопад выстой 80 м. В Черногоре расположено озеро Несамовите. С Говерлы можно, при хорошей видимости, видеть Ивано-Франковск, Коломию, Снятин.  

Ivano-Frankivs'k Region

Wherever you glance over the forest greens everywhere, the Blue Mountains tower over, and between them the rapid rivers and streams discharge it pure waters to the Prut River and further to the wide reaches of the Dnister River.

But Ivano-Frankivs’k Region is not only a beauty. Here there are highly developed agriculture and forestry, electric power industry, fuel, chemical and petrochemical, machine-building and metal-working, woodworking, light and food branches of the industry.  

The City of Kyiv

Kyiv is the political center of the country, where the residence of country leader – the President of Ukraine is located as well as Supreme Soviet of Ukraine, Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, Constitutional Court of Ukraine, and Supreme Court of Ukraine, central public authorities, diplomatic representatives of foreign states and representatives of international organizations in Ukraine.

It is the spiritual, cultural, historical and scientific-educational center of Ukraine. The Kyiv Regional Council and Kyiv Regional State Administration and their executive authorities are also located in Kyiv as well as headquarters of political parties, offices of public and trade-union organizations.

 

Flora and Fauna of Ukraine

The plant life of Ukraine numbers close to 30,000 species, over four hundred of which are registered on the endangered-species list. Natural vegetation covers over 19 million hectares or close to one third of the country’s territory.
Most of the endemic, rare or declining species are located in the Crimean and Carpathian mountains. Almost half of the endemic and 30 percent of the rare and declining plants are concentrated there.
