FAQFrequently asked questions

What is the Herget Glacier and where is it?

This is a valley glacier on the southeastern slope of Kazbeg, in the Kazbeg municipality of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region of Georgia. From here, from under the snow, the Chheri River begins its journey.

How big is he?

It is about 7.1 km long, with an area of about 11 km². The tongue of the glacier slides down to the mark of 2,900 m above sea level - that's where those who want to touch the ice with their own eyes get there.

How to get to it?

The landmark is the village of Gergeti and the famous Trinity Church above it: the trails to Kazbek start from this place, past which they lead to the glacier. The road is not for slippers, because it is a serious highland.

What is interesting on the glacier itself?

On the left edge, the building of the old weather station, built back in 1933 for observing the atmosphere and melting snow, is still standing. The place is historic, although the station itself has been without regular meteorologists for a long time.

Why does the glacier lie in such a strange recess?

Most of it was located in an old, well-eroded volcanic caldera - that is, the ice simply settled in the remains of an ancient volcano. Kazbek and Ortsveri peaks rise nearby.
