What is Lake Skadar and what makes it special?
This is the largest lake in the Balkans, of tectonic origin. The area stretches from 370 to 530 km depending on the season - water here does not like to stand still.
Is it Montenegro or Albania?
Both and that. Two thirds of the lake belong to Montenegro, the rest to Albania. It got its name from the Albanian city of Shkoder on its shore.
How deep is it?
Not very - on average about 12 meters. At the deepest point, it reaches 44 meters, so you can swim without much trepidation.
What is worth seeing here?
Birds, and many. About 270 species live on the lake, among them the last pelicans in Europe. The Montenegrin part was made a national park back in 1983 - it is one of the largest bird sanctuaries of the continent.
What can be done here?
The lake lives by shipping and fishing, so a boat trip is an obvious plan. For ornithologists in general, be sure to take binoculars.
