What is Andriake?
These are the ruins of an ancient port town in southwestern Turkey, in the Demre district of Antalya province. Andriake was once the sea gate of the neighboring city of Myra in Lycia.
What is this place famous for historically?
It was here, according to tradition, that the apostle Paul, together with other prisoners, boarded an Alexandrian ship bound for Italy. There are mentions of Andriake in Ptolemy, Pliny and Appian, so the town's fame is quite ancient.
What can be seen today?
The most notable structure is the Roman granaries (horrea), built under Emperor Hadrian around 119. The ruins of a church and a synagogue have been preserved nearby, and the finds from the excavations are exhibited in the local museum.
How to get to Andriake?
The landmark is the modern city of Demre in the province of Antalya, from where you can reach the ruins. Most travelers combine their visit with a visit to the Church of St. Nicholas and the rock tombs of Myra nearby.
When is the best time to come?
As everywhere on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, it is most comfortable in spring and autumn - it is hot here in summer, and there is little shade among the ruins.
