FAQFrequently asked questions

What are Almaarasan springs and where are they?

This is a gorge southwest of Almaty (Kazakhstan), on the northern slope of Zailiyskyi Alatau, at an altitude of about 1,780 meters. The very name Almaarasan is associated with the local thermal radon-sulfur springs.

What are the local sources interesting?

Thermal, radon-sulphur springs come out of the ground by themselves. In 1931, as many as 16 springs were counted here and a balneological resort was opened - people were brought here for treatment.

Is it possible to get there now?

This is where the sad begins. In the 1990s, the sanatorium was privatized and then closed to visitors. As of 2016, the gorge is surrounded by a fence and, according to the description, is guarded by people with weapons - so simply going to the springs will not work.

And the springs themselves are still beating?

Most of them have disappeared in recent decades. That is, not much remains of the former resort with sixteen springs - the story is more about what was, than about an active spa.
