Bay of Kotor
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is the Bay of Kotor and where is it?
This is the largest bay of the Adriatic, which lies almost entirely in Montenegro. Contrary to popular legend, this is not a fjord, but a ria - a flooded river canyon, so geologists spoil the romance a little here.
What are the must-see cities around the bay?
Kotor with its steep fortress walls that climb up to the fortress of Saint John. Perast with a high bell tower, and Herceg-Noviy is the largest town with old architecture. Tivat, by contrast, is young, having already grown up during the time of Yugoslavia.
Why is the bay so convenient for ships?
It consists of several spacious bays connected by narrow channels, so it hides from the open sea. It is not for nothing that it is called one of the best natural harbors in Europe - the water is calm and the depth reaches 60 meters.
How old is the history here?
People settled here in antiquity. The bay got its Latin name from the Illyrian city of Rizon, founded around 229 BC. Then the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Ottomans and Austrians ruled here in turn - each left their mark.
What else is interesting to see on the way?
The coast is dotted with ancient Orthodox and Catholic churches, some of which still serve as places of pilgrimage. And Montenegro has long dreamed of crossing the Veryg bridge across the bay - so maybe someday the landscape will change a little.
