Antelope Canyon
FAQFrequently asked questions
What are these Antelopes and where to look for them?
This is a slot canyon in northern Arizona, near the town of Page, near the border with Utah. It consists of two parts - the Upper and Lower Canyons, cut through the Navajo sandstone.
How to get there - just come and go?
No, it will not work on its own. The land belongs to the Navajo people, so entry is only with a local guide and for a fee.
When is the best time to go for beautiful photos?
Spring (March-April) and autumn (October-November) provide the best light, when the sun's rays penetrate the canyon. In winter, it is dark inside, you will have to take additional lighting.
How safe is it there?
The main threat is flash floods, and the rain can fall many kilometers from here, and the water will come here. In 1997, 11 tourists died here, after which a warning system was installed, but the risk did not go anywhere.
Where does this name come from and why is the canyon so winding?
The canyon was carved out by water and wind over the centuries, and seasonal monsoon rains accelerated the process - hence the flowing flowing forms. The Navajo call the upper part "Tsé bighánílíní" - where the water flows through the rocks.
